Nurturing an Innovative Culture in a Service Organization

As the 2013 Fellow in Gensler’s Executive Studio, I advised firm leadership on the creation of its innovation program. In doing so, I focused on four key areas: (a) shifting the innovation conversation away from a dominant focus on physical outputs and towards the fundamental process inputs that enable design excellence to be consistently evident in the services provided for clients, (b) crafting effective strategies for building awareness of key innovation issues and promoting new methods for sharing early stage ideas and experiments that will result in adoption of behaviors that support a true culture of innovation, (c) introducing techniques and processes that contribute to “everyday innovation” by directly teaching them to communities, teams, and individuals across the firm, and (d) developing a portfolio framework to help prioritize and focus the firm’s investments in innovation initiatives.

“Laura is a brilliant leader who helps organizations achieve innovation in whatever way they define it. She’ll shake things up and put them back together in a way that brings people together and empowers staff with the skills to re-create the successes.”
